The Story of the Two Dragons

The concept behind our approach to fitness here at Martial Fitness Cape Cod is very simple, Which Dragon are You Feeding? This question has its origins in an ancient Chinese fable told to Sifu Mike by his instructor, Sifu Eric Cruz, which he now passes on to his Kung Fu students on a regular basis in an effort to help them, as they grow and train, learn to deal with life’s complex, and sometimes overwhelming, problems.

The story goes as follows….

It is said that we all have TWO DRAGONS living within us. As human beings, these dragons are vital to our existence. They represent our Chi, otherwise known as of life source, our spirit, our light. Without both of these dragons, there is no life left inside us.
These Dragons are constantly circulating within us, spiraling around and looking for food to make them strong, to sustain them. One Dragon is BLACK, and represents the emotions of fear, anger, jealousy, ego, vanity…and all the dark elements of ourselves. The other Dragon is WHITE, and represents love, happiness, caring, selflessness, compassion…and all the lighter elements of ourselves.

This can also be seen as the “Ying and Yang” of our existence. As the symbol denotes, there is a required amount of black within the white, and white within the black; this is vital to the cycle of life being complete and on-going.

Now, you must understand that BOTH dragons are vital to our existence; one cannot survive without the other. Without darkness, there would be no light, without hate; there would be no love, and so on. Also, both dragons must EAT to survive. When we make choices in life, when we decide to feel anger as a controlling emotion, we are feeding our BLACK dragon. Conversely, when we decide to feel love, we are feeding our WHITE dragon. Every day, several times a day, we make these choices on which dragon to feed. In some people, it is evident that the BLACK dragon is getting the bulk of the food, and has grown stronger and taken over as the controlling entity within…..Others seem to have done so with their WHITE dragon, leaving them unable to access their “BLACK dragon” traits when needed.

How does this relate to YOUR Health and Wellness? Its simple, using this philosophy behind our training methods will allow you and your trainer to not only target problem areas, physically and mentally, but also WHY they are there and have become problem areas. Only then can you make life changes that will feed that Dragon that will help you to reach your goals and maintain them!

So in questions of living your life and dealing with life’s problems, reaching and maintaining your health and fitness goals, the question becomes…
WHICH DRAGON ARE YOU FEEDING?

At Martial Fitness, we are here to help you gain balance in your life.
